Born in Massachusetts and a New Englander most of his life, musician Eric Paul Carreiro has called Austin, Texas his home since 2009. Drawing on a life's lessons in rock, folk, pop, funk and jazz, Eric pulls strands from all these into a singular, cohesive whole - music for people who don't like to get bored. His new release, Blind Man's Bluff, opens up this landscape to anyone willing to brave the ride. It's unlike any other album you will hear in this or possibly any year.
After years of playing almost every imaginable kind of music for a living, he decided to stop using his voice as if it belonged to someone else. His original songs, which marry a far-flung love of music with a deep connection to the interior life, finally demanded to be heard and set him on a very different path. To his delight he found that friends, old and new, offered encouragement and help in many forms. Completed in 2016, Blind Man's Bluff is the fruit of this journey.
The album's dozen-plus tracks span all of the above-mentioned styles with grace, playing hard and going gentle as the moment calls for. Smartly arranged and passionately performed, the songs speak unflinchingly of things that matter, reaching out to both head and heart through an ample feast for the ears. On record, the aim was to fulfill as much as possible the writer's vision for each song; the result is a tapestry that rewards repeated listening with new details and insights. On stage, Eric's skills as a communicator and interpreter step in and flesh out the finer points. Alone or in a band setting, he treats every performance as a chance to open up the treasure chest, find what rings true and serve it up fresh.
A family man and prodigal son, Eric is always on the lookout for silver linings. A contemplative by trade, he's still happiest in the company of friends, and he'll gladly play the fool if there's a good song in it. The journey, even if winding and narrow, can also be full of hope. Love and friendship provide the map and the keys to unlock many gates along the way; good songs and stories help lighten the load and illuminate the path. Blind Man's Bluff is brimming with all of these – a leap of faith well worth taking.
